EIU Department of History

Careers in History

One of our goals is to help prepare students for the 21st century job market. That is why HIS 1101, required for all undergraduates, introduces students to the wide range of professions and occupations where history majors can exercise their knowledge and skills. History and History with International Studies Majors will prepare resumés and cover letters as part of the requirements of the departmental capstone. And History with Teacher Licensure students receive professional training throughout their EIU studies, as well as support as they apply for their teaching positions. We work closely with EIU Career Services to ensure students have the best possible support in finding their first jobs or graduate program as they graduate.
Here are some of the careers and career resources we have identified for History majors:

  • Job Sites
    • Indeed
      • Main commercial jobsite with trends, forums, and resume posting.
    • target="_blank"LinkedIn
      • One of the largest professional networking sites. Includes news and company information.
    • Monster
      • A commercial jobsite with news and resume posting.
    • NACE - Knowledge Center - Job Seeker Resources
      • From the National Association of Colleges and Employers, this site includes resume and interview advice, how to market yourself to employers, guidance for on-the-job success, and more.
