Diverse Options

Students in the Department of Public Health are able to explore three options in the major of Public Health. They are not the typical fields of the health profession. Community Health, Health Administration, and Emergency Management and Disaster Preparedness.

Internships

The internship experience is a vital component in the overall professional preparation of students in the Public Health major at Eastern Illinois University with the Community Health, Health Administration, and Emergency Management and Disaster Preparedness options. From local agencies, to state and national associations, and international settings, the internship is designed to provide the student with professional work experiences beyond the classroom. Research

Faculty work with students in conducting contemporary research and creative activities. Students have the opportunity to present their research at local, state, and national conferences. Recent projects have included:

  • Student perceptions about campus police
  • Gender identity issues among college students
  • Student knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about organ donation

    Health Administration

    This option is for students that want to work in a variety of settings, including clinical, public health, and social services and also want to be responsible for the day-to-day operations of a program or facility. Click here for more information on this program.

    This option is for students that want preparation for such careers as: Health Educator, Health Program Director, Quality Assurance staff, County Public Health Educator, Public Health Specialist, Health Counselor, and entry-level Health Administrator.     Emergency Management and Disaster Preparedness

    Health Communication

    The Health Communication major is an exciting new interdisciplinary program developed by the Departments of Communication Studies and Public Health. Ideal for students interested in pursuing communication-related professions within health and healthcare settings, the major encompasses coursework in both Departments, and includes an internship experience.
