Established in 2014, the Sandra and Jack Pine Scholarship Program was created to promote the study of the physical sciences at Eastern Illinois University by supporting students within the Honors College majoring in Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics.

Criteria for selection are as follows:

An incoming freshman must have a (i) a composite score of 30 (or SAT equivalent score of 1360) and either an unweighted high school GPA of 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) or ranking in the top 90th percentile of the graduating class; or (ii) a composite ACT score of 28 (or SAT equivalent score of 1300) and either an unweighted high school GPA of 3.75 (on a 4.00 scale) or a ranking in the top 95th percentile of the graduating class. Candidates entering their freshman year must submit a letter of recommendation from a high school Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics instructor indicating the applicant's academic ability, accomplishments, and interest in the study of Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics.

For recipients entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year, the recipient must major in Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics and must maintain a GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Current EIU candidates must submit a letter of recommendation from an EIU Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics instructor describing the applicant's academic ability, accomplishments, and interest in the study of Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics.

The scholarships shall be merit based, but financial need shall be considered in the selection of the scholarship recipients. A recipient may be eligible to receive an award in consecutive years as long as criteria are met, although they must compete for the award again each year. The award(s) shall be announced in the Spring and paid equally in the following Fall and Spring semesters to Eastern Illinois University to be first applied against costs (tuition, fees, housing, etc.) associated with each recipient's full-time attendance at Eastern Illinois University.
