2012 Maurice D. Shepherd High School Chemistry Contest

Seventy-seven students from 11 area high schools participated in the contest, which was held for the 37th consecutive year.
Dr. Svetlana Mitrovski from the EIU Chemistry Department presented a fascinating talk entitled "Tools of the Trade: How We See Things We Can't See."
Winners
Sullivan High School was the top team, winning the contest with a team average of 42.92.
Teams from Mahomet-Seymour, Effingham, and Cumberland placed second, third, and fourth, respectively.
Pawel Strzebonski (Mahomet-Seymour) placed first with a score of 47.5. Cameron Jones (Sullivan) placed second with a score of 45.0. Third- through sixth-place winners were John Mauck (Sullivan, 44.75), Delaney Holden (Lawrenceville, 39.25), Shelbi Tingey (Sullivan, 39.0), and Ethan Russell (Mahomet-Seymour, 39.0) (fifth and sixth places were decided by a tie-breaker).
These students were awarded plaques honoring their accomplishments.

Congratulations to the top teams and top students, and our thanks to all who participated. We are especially grateful to each teacher, since the success of the contest very much depends on their willingness to enter and bring students to the contest.
The 2012 contest is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, May 8, 2013. We hope you can make it.
