Services

EIU Student Legal Service (SLS), a division of Student Affairs, serves all full-time undergraduate and graduate students. 

The staff attorney provides legal advice and direction on many topics including:

• Landlord, tenant or housing issues
• Traffic violations
• Misdemeanor criminal offenses
• Municipal ordinance violations

• Expungement

Many students live off-campus. When a student or group of students decide to rent an apartment or house, SLS encourages them to bring a copy of their lease for the attorney to explain the terms and provisions of the lease, before signing the lease!

EXCLUDED SERVICES

Unfortunately, not all legal issues can be handled by our office. Below are some matters that we cannot assist with:

• Student vs. Student
• Courtroom representation
• Claims against the university
• Claims against the state of Illinois
• Student Accountability & Support matters
• Various other issues considered out of the scope for Student Legal Services

If your legal problem can not be handled by the SLS office, the attorney can help by directing you to other legal resources.
