Subject: Strategic Planning Update

EIU'S Strategic Planning Initiative Needs Your Input!

Dear Campus and Regional Community Members:

Throughout 2011, Eastern Illinois University will be engaged in a collaborative strategic planning process that will help us create a sustainable academic and financial future for the university.

As President Perry has previously outlined, this will be a strategic plan with vision and action:
> The plan will be clear and concise, no more than 10 pages. It will not be a doorstop.
> The plan will be actionable, with implementation of 2 to 3 goals to begin in 2012.
> The plan will define the direction of the university for the next 5 to 10 years.

For a complete view of the process, its underlying values and our progress to date, please go to our EIU Collaborative Strategic Planning website, http://www.eiu.edu/strategicplanning/.

The second phase of the process, the "data gathering and engagement" phase, is approaching a May 10 completion deadline. The data generated during this phase will inform the steering committee and help it identify the 5 to 10 strategic priorities that will be addressed in the plan. In the past few weeks, members of the strategic planning steering committee have worked with hundreds of constituents and leaders throughout the community and the campus. If you haven’t been engaged in the planning process, now is your opportunity to be heard.

If you have not yet participated in one of the strategic planning engagement sessions, please consider attending one of the following open sessions:
> 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 26, 1895 Room in the MLK University Union
> 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 26, Rotary Room A in the Charleston Carnegie Public Library

Alternatively, if you cannot attend the above sessions, please visit http://www.eiu.edu/strategicplanning/survey.php and submit your responses to the following questions.

1. What would make EIU first choice for students, faculty, and staff?

2. What is the one thing we need to change at EIU that would enable us to be a great institution?

3. What about our history and traditions do we need to remember and preserve as we plan for the future?

4. What are 2 emerging issues that you can anticipate that we will have to deal with effectively if we are going to thrive in the future? (e.g., role of technology in the classroom, retirements, tenure, demographics, online education)

5. What is the most vital core value that EIU should preserve?

6. What questions or other observations do you have for the strategic planning steering committee?

Thank you, and we very much look forward to hearing from you!
