Subject: Invitation to Participate in Sexting Research Study

Dear EIU Students:

You are invited to participate in a research study designed to assess the knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of college students with regard to “sexting.” “Sexting” is defined as the sending or receiving of sexually explicit photos, videos, e-mail, text and chat by cell phone or internet use. This research is being directed by Dr. Misty Rhoads and Dr. Rich Cavanaugh who are faculty in the Department of Health Studies, and student Kevin Wood, within the College of Education and Professional Studies at EIU. Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary.

You are being asked to participate in this research because you are a student at Eastern Illinois University and therefore representative of the population we are seeking to study. There are no foreseeable risks associated with your participation, nor will you benefit directly for your participation in this study. However, the results of this research project may contribute to generalizeable knowledge with regard to “sexting.”

Your participation will involve responding to questions concerning “sexting” through an online survey. The survey will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. By clicking on the link below, which will take you to the on-line survey, you are giving consent to your participation. You may withdraw from the survey at any point if you feel uncomfortable answering any questions.

Your survey responses will be both anonymous and confidential. Data from this research will be coded to preserve confidentiality. All survey findings will be reported in the aggregate. Once the data is collected, only the primary investigator and co-investigator will have access to and be able to review the responses. All data will be stored on a password-protected computer in the primary investigator’s office and will be destroyed within three years of the completion of this study.

Again, participation in this study is voluntary and not a requirement for being a recipient of benefits or services from EIU. If you volunteer to participate, you may withdraw at any time without consequences or loss of benefits or services to which you are otherwise entitled.

All reports based on this research and written by the researcher(s) will maintain anonymity and confidentiality of the participants. If you have any questions concerning this study or the procedures involved, you may contact:

You will be given the opportunity to discuss any questions about your rights as a research subject with a member of the IRB. The IRB is an independent committee composed of members of the University community, as well as lay members of the community not connected with EIU.

By clicking on the continue button below, I voluntarily agree to participate in this study. I understand that I am free to withdraw my consent and discontinue my participation at any given time. I also can print out a copy of this informed consent statement should I wish to do so.

WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE RESPOND BY April 2nd, 2011.
