Dear Eastern Illinois University Faculty,
I am inviting you to participate in my dissertation study on equity, inclusion, and retention in higher education. The title of my study is INCLUSION AND RETENTION IN HIGHER EDUCATION: PERCEPTIONS OF UNIVERSITY CAMPUS MEMBERS ON UNIVERSITY IDENTITY AND PRACTICES.
This study seeks to gain understanding of how a university conveys its identity through various practices and how those practices support and/or contradict that identity through the perceptions of faculty and first-year students. In addition, this study seeks to explore how university identity and practices impact feelings of inclusion within the campus community and decisions of first-year students to continue enrollment at the university. Overall, this study seeks to understand how university campus members perceive strengths and weaknesses within the university community. The knowledge gained from this study contribute to the literature on first-year students’ needs, student retention in higher education, and student and faculty perceptions of inclusion in higher education. This study does not seek to generalize its findings across universities but may serve as a tool for individual universities to conduct their own research to meet the needs of various campus members.
This survey consists of open-ended questions that will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Your input will contribute to identifying your institution’s ability to fulfill its mission and value statements. All participants will remain anonymous.
