Subject: Every Panther Counts in the 2010 Census

Dear Students,

The 2010 census is here, and it is tremendously important that every student be counted. According to the Census Bureau, individuals should be counted where they live most of the time. For most Eastern Illinois University students, that means that they should be counted in Charleston. Funding levels for the City of Charleston are determined by the Census count. Every student not counted costs the City of Charleston $300 per year that could be used to improve infrastructure and services in the city.

Who should be counted?
Everyone who lives in the United States on April 1, including international students and non U.S. citizen students.

How should you be counted?
• Living in residence halls and Greek Court: If you live in a University residence hall or in Greek Court, you will receive a 2010 Census questionnaire from a University Housing staff member during the week of April 11-17. For your convenience, meetings will be held on residence hall floors and in chapter houses to assist you with completing the form. You will not need to mail the form. Simply return it to your Housing staff member.
• Living in University Court, University Apartments, or off campus: If you live in University Court, University Apartments, or off campus, a 2010 Census questionnaire should have been mailed to your apartment or house within the past two weeks. All students living at the address are considered one household, so only one form per household should be completed with information about all the people living at that address. Please return the form in the U.S. mail envelope provided. If you have lost your Census form or have any questions, please contact Charleston City Hall at 345-5650. Extra forms, as well as Census staff, are available.
• Living full-time with parents or guardians: If you commute to school and reside full-time at your parents’ or guardians’ household, you should be accounted for on your parents’ or guardians’ household form, so you do not need to complete a separate form.

The 2010 Census questionnaire is easy, important, and confidential. The form takes about 10 minutes to complete. By law, the U.S. Census Bureau cannot share respondents’ answers with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement entities.

Please be counted, and help spread the word that EVERY PANTHER COUNTS!

Sincerely,

Daniel P. Nadler
