Recruitment & Membership Intake
The fraternity and sorority life community at EIU has over 96 years of rich tradition. Joining a fraternity or sorority can be an exciting opportunity to meet new people, make friends, and increase campus engagement.
The joining process is either council- or chapter-coordinated, depending on which organization you are interested in joining. Fraternities and sororities conduct recruitment and intake events, activities, and informational sessions throughout the year.
Rush, Recruitment, and Intake are terms used by fraternities and sororities to identify the joining process. Intake is a term specifically used by many culturally based organizations to bring in new members. Please note that chapters have minimum GPA requirements, either from high school or from college, for participation in the recruitment or intake process.

The recruitment process at EIU allows potential members to visit each sorority and find a group of women who feel like their home away from home. This mutual selection process allows for the best fit for both the chapter and the new member. EIU Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment consists of Sorority Preview Night, a week of Open Houses, Preference Night, and then Bid Day. Every Panhellenic member organization has its own internal GPA to join. It is recommended that potential members have at least a 2.50 GPA in high school or college to join.

The process for joining a culturally based fraternity or sorority varies by organization and takes place throughout the academic year.
Students interested in joining a cultural fraternity or sorority are encouraged to research the history and values of the organization(s) they are interested in, and attend chapter-hosted programs, events, and community service. Interested students are also encouraged to attend interest meetings/informational sessions hosted by the chapter to learn more about the requirements and the process for joining, as the process is unique to each organization.
At the beginning of each semester, NALFO and NPHC host Meet the Greeks and Beyond the Letters: Exploration of NPHC & NALFO. These events allow interested students to interact with fraternity and sorority members from all chapters to learn more about each organization in an informal setting. At these events, the organizations will also showcase their traditions of stepping, strolling, or saluting.
