EIU Campus Mail Services

Mail delivered to a department addressed to a staff member who has left the department, should be forwarded by the department to the person's new address, if known. When forwarding such mail, use a black magic marker to draw through the incorrect address (not the individual's name) and then insert the correct new address. Mark out any bar-codes on the envelope. Return the mail to Campus Mail Services. It is important to NOT open mail that you return to Mail Services so as to not incur postage charges to your account. If it remains unopened, there is no postage necessary to return it to the sender.

If a forwarding address for the staff member is not available, use a black magic marker to draw thru the incorrect address and mark the face of the envelope "UTF" (the USPS knows that this means "unable to forward") and return to Campus Mail Services. Mark out any bar coding on the envelope.
Once again, it is important to NOT open mail that you return to Mail Services so as to not incur postage charges to your account. If it remains unopened, there is no postage necessary to return it to the sender.

First class mail is forwarded free of charge as long as it remains unopened.

Periodical class mail (newspapers, magazines, etc.) may be forwarded free for a period of sixty days after the individual has left. During this time every effort should be made to notify publishers and correspondents of the address change.

Please keep forwarded mail separate from other mail.
