68% of the incoming freshman class are cast in a production their first semester.

Majoring in something else but love the theatre? Our program is open to all EIU students! Come and audition, or work behind the scenes — you'll always be welcome.

We have a well-rounded curriculum. We have a diverse season. (Yes! We do musicals! And Shakespeare!) We have a state-of-the-art facility. That's not all we offer, though:

Internship Opportunities

We encourage our students to seek internships outside the university to enhance their education and start the groundwork for their career in theatre arts. Students from EIU have interned at Disney, Steppenwolf and the Goodman, just to name a few, but the possibilities are wide open. And credit can be earned while you are on the job – so get out there and give it a try!

Departmental Honors

The Department of Theatre Arts offers a departmental honors program for students who meet the criteria. Departmental honors courses afford students the opportunity to work one-on-one with a faculty member in an area of personal interest, allowing them to delve more deeply into a topic of their choice. Graduates of this program have done thesis production work in different styles of acting, directing, design and dramaturgy. Many have also been the recipients of scholarships and research grants enabling them to pursue their interests.

Study Abroad

While at EIU, consider the benefits of study abroad. Studying abroad gives you the opportunity to see plays produced in a wide variety of styles and performance venues along with a chance to visit the historic sites from which our art was born. Consider a semester-long exchange at one of our partner schools in Australia, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, North Cyprus and the UK, or take part in a faculty-led program, such as our own Politics on the Irish Stage. You can earn credit toward your major while experiencing the world of theatre on an entirely different level.
