Undergraduate Courses
CDS 2000 Introduction to Communication Disorders & Sciences
Fall, Spring, 1 credit hour. An overview of the profession, scope of practice, work settings, research applications to clinical practice, and impact of communication disorders. Topics will be addressed using interactive seminar format with portfolio assessment.
CDS 2100 Phonetics and Phonological Development
Spring, 3 credit hours. A study of the physiologic and acoustic bases of phonemes in the English language. The course will include transcription skills of the International Phonetic Alphabet. This course develops an understanding of normal, culturally different and disordered phonological systems through the lifespan.
CDS 2200 Language Acquisition
Fall, Spring, 3 credit hours. Theoretical foundation for defining language, the major components of language and normal acquisition sequences from infant precursors through early childhood and adolescence. Patterns of normal acquisition as a guide for evaluation of developmental disorders are presented.
CDS 2500 Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech, Language, Swallowing, and Hearing Mechanisms
Fall, 3 credit hours. Study of the basic neurologic, anatomical, and physiologic processes of speech, language, swallowing, and hearing.
CDS 2800 Speech Science
Spring, 3 credit hours. Application of basic acoustic and physiologic information to normal speech in the areas of respiration, phonation and articulation. Prerequisites: CDS 2500, and PHY 1071, 1072, or permission of the department chair.
CDS 3100 Phonological Assessment and Remediation
Fall, 3 credit hours. Study of the diagnostic evaluation and intervention techniques for functional phonological disorders. Assessment and remediation procedures include options within phonological rule-based and traditional motor-production approaches. Prerequisites: Admission to the major, CDS 2100.
CDS 3200 Developmental Language Disorders
Fall, 3 credit hours. Study and application of the causes of language disorders and the assessment and intervention strategies applied to language disordered children in early, middle, or later stages of language development in both major and minority cultures. Prerequisites: Admission to the major, CDS 2200; or permission of the chair.
CDS 3500 Neurological Embryological Aspects of Communication
Spring, 3 credit hours. Study of embryological development and basic neurological function specific to speech and hearing mechanisms and disorders. Prerequisites: Admission to the major, CDS 2500; or permission of the instructor.
CDS 3700 Diagnosis and Treatment of Communication Disorders
Fall, 3 credit hours. Study of general diagnostic principles and techniques including case history development and speech mechanism exams, general treatment principles and paradigms, and clinical report writing. Prerequisites: Admission to the Communication Disorders and Sciences Major.
CDS 3900 Introduction to Clinical Techniques in Communication Disorders
Fall, Spring, 1 credit hour. An introduction to a variety of methodologies used in the management of communication disorders. Through the lab activities, students will observe and evaluate clinical sessions. Students will complete 25 hours of pre-clinical observation in this course. This course is graded A, B, C, N/C. Prerequisite: Admission to the CDS major.
CDS 300 Introduction to Audiology
Fall, 3 credit hours. The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of audiologic assessment and associated hearing disorders and to review the necessary hearing science principles. Prerequisites: Admission to the major, CDS 2800; or permission of the department chair.
CDS 4350 Aural Rehabilitation
Spring, 3 credit hours. To acquire knowledge concerning hearing impairment and its impact on speech and language characteristics of children and adults. The student will learn tests and techniques which are fundamental to the rehabilitation and management of the hearing impaired person. Prerequisites: Admission to the major, CDS 3300; or permission of the department chair. CDS 4600 Seminar in CDS
Spring and Fall, 3 credit hours. A case study format is used to explore the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of speech, language, and hearing disorders. The focus of this course is on the use of critical thinking skills and evidence-based practice information to design diagnostic plans, interpret diagnostic results and develop treatment plans. The course will allow students to integrate and apply information from numerous university and departmental undergraduate learning goals in this capstone experience. Completion of CDS 3100, 3200, and 3700; and completion of or concurrent enrollment in CDS 3900 and 4300.
CDS 4644 Honors Thesis
Arranged, 1-3 credit hours. (Replaces six semester hours of electives.) (May be repeated a maximum of six semester hours). Original research in speech, language, or hearing science. A written report and oral presentation are required. Prerequisites: Admission to the Department Honors Program in Communication Disorders and Sciences; permission of the Department Honors Coordinator; and Department Chair.
CDS 4666 Honors Seminar
Arranged, Spring, 3 credit hours. Reading and discussion of original research projects in speech, language, or hearing science. Prerequisites: Admission to the Department Honors Program in Communication Disorders and Sciences; permission of the Department Honors Coordinator; and Department Chair.
CDS 4690 Honors Seminar in CDS
Fall, 3-1-3. A case study format is used to explore the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of speech, language, and hearing disorders. The focus of this course is on the use of critical thinking skills and evidence-based practice information to design diagnostic plans, interpret diagnostic results and develop treatment plans. The lab component which is unique to the honor's course will discuss research methods and experimental designs for answering evidence-based diagnostic and treatment questions. Admission to the Departmental Honors Program and completion of CDS 3100, 3200, 3700, 3900 and PSY 2610; and completion of or current enrollment in CDS 4300.

CDS 4760 Voice Production and Disorders
Fall, 3 credit hours. Study of normal voice function and the etiology and remediation of functional and organic voice disorders; pitch, intensity, quality, resonance, dysphonia, laryngectomy. Prerequisites: Admission to the major or permission of the instructor.
CDS 4800 Communication Modalities
Spring, 3 credit hours. Course will provide information on expressive, nonverbal communication systems (sign language, and alternative and augmentative communication). These areas represent communication modes relevant to the practice of speech-language pathology. The lab will provide performance-based application activities. Prerequisites: CDS 2200, 3100, 3200, 3700, or permission of the department chair.
CDS 4820 Language and Literacy
Spring, 2 credit hours. Course will address the oral-to-written language connection and role of the speech pathologist in facilitating development of literacy skills. Assessment and intervention techniques will be included. Prerequisites: Admission to the major, CDS 2200, 3200; or permission of the chair.
CDS 4850 Independent Study
Arranged, 1- 6 credit hours. (May be repeated to maximum of six semester hours.) Independent directed study in speech, language or hearing processes or disorders. Prerequisites: Admission to the major and permission of department chair.
CDS 4900 Clinical Practice
Fall, Spring, 1 credit hour. Supervised work with persons with a communication disorder. Prerequisites: Admission to the major, CDS 2100, 2200, 3100, 3200, 3700, 3900; a major GPA of 2.85, and a cumulative GPA of 2.50; or permission of the department chairperson. With permission of the department chairperson, students may repeat this course for credit. This course is available during Summer Session only with permission of the department chair.

CDS 5000 Introduction to Graduate Study
Summer, 2 credit hours. Introduction to descriptive and experimental research design in the field of communication disorders and sciences. Students will use research methods knowledge to find and critically evaluate therapy efficacy and treatment outcome research literature. Prerequisities: Open only to graduate level, degree seeking CDS majors and Departmental Honors students.
CDS 5001 Research Experience in Communication Disorders and Science
Fall, 1 credit hour. Students will design and implement a research project to answer a clinical research question. Students will find, review, critique, and summarize research literature. Research questions will be developed; data will be collected, analyzed, and interpreted. Research results will be summarized and discussed in a research paper and poster presentation. Prerequisites: Open to graduate level, degree seeking CDS majors; completion of CDS 5000, or permission of the chair.
CDS 5090 Advanced Clinical Techniques
Summer, 1 credit hour. Orientation to graduate clinical policies and procedures specific to the practice of speech-language pathology. Analysis and synthesis of diagnostic and treatment methodologies used in the management of clients with communication disorders. Prerequisites:Open to graduate level, degree-seeking CDS majors or permission of the chair.
CDS 5100 Motor Speech Disorders
Spring, 3 credit hours. Advanced study of the neuromotor system responsible for speech. Content will include etiology and therapy for dysarthria, childhood and adult apraxia, cerebral palsy and other neuromotor and neuromuscular disorders. Prerequisites: Graduate degree-seeking status or permission of the department chair.
CDS 5150 Stuttering
Fall, 3 credit hours. Prominent etiological theories along with the development of stuttering are surveyed. Diagnostic and preventative procedures along with the integration of prominent theories in the treatment of stuttering are studied and evaluated. Prerequisites: Graduate degree-seeking status or permission of the department chairperson.
CDS 5200 Developmental Syndrome Disorders
Fall, 2 credit hours. Developmental syndrome disorders will be defined and discussed in regard to genetic markers and resulting characteristics. Emphasis will be on speech-language-hearing impact. Disorder discussion will include diagnostic assessment, behavioral symptoms, and treatment programming alternatives presented through case examples and video segments. Prerequisites: Graduate status or permission of the chair.
CDS 5250 Advanced Language Disorders
Spring, 3 credit hours. Course will include critical evaluation of assessment and treatment options for language-based learning problems and childhood/adolescent language disorders, as well as examination of research models and data to guide choice of treatment variables and approaches. Prerequisites: Graduate status or permission of the chair.
CDS 5300 Acquired Language Disorders
Fall, 3 credit hours. A comprehensive study of acquired language disorders including aphasia and right hemisphere dysfunction following damage or deterioration in the cortical and subcortical zone(s) of language. Emphasis on assessment and treatment of acquired conditions. Prerequisites: Graduate status or permission of the chair.
CDS 5350 Cognitive Communication Disorders
Spring, 2 credit hours. A comprehensive study of acquired, cognitive-based language disorders including traumatic brain injury, related cognitive communication sequelae, and dementia. Emphasis on assessment and treatment of cognitive communication disorders. Prerequisites: Graduate status or permission of the chair.
CDS 5400 Special Topics
Fall, Spring, Summer, 2 credit hours. Intensive study of contemporary problems, issues, trends, and developments in the field of communication disorders. Prerequisites: Graduate degree-seeking status or permission of the department chairperson. May be repeated for a maximum of eight semester hours of credit.
CDS 5500 Dysphagia Management in Children and Adults
Spring, 3 credit hours. The study of mechanical/neurologic feeding and swallowing disorders in children and adults and discussion of assessment and direct/indirect treatment techniques for oropharyngeal swallowing impairments. Prerequisites: CDS 2500 or permission of the instructor.
CDS 5600 Professional Regulations and Issues in Speech -Language Pathology
Summer, 2 credit hours. Discussion of rules and regulations, best practice patterns, current trends, and ethical issues in the practice of speech-language pathology in educational and medical settings.
CDS 5800 Grand Rounds in Communication Disorders
Summer, 3 credit hours. Case presentations for assessment, intervention, and discussion of general issues in specific communication disorder areas. Low incidence cases will be highlighted (e.g., cognitive, stuttering, acquired language, swallowing, as well as cases using augmentative techniques) to provide students with performance-based skill acquisition in a variety of communication disorder areas. Pre-requisites: Graduate status.
CDS 5850 Independent Study
Arranged, 1-6 credit hours. Independent directed study in speech, language, or hearing processes or disorders. Prerequisites: Permission of the instructor and the department chairperson. NOTE: A maximum of nine semester hours may be earned in combination of CDS 5850 and CDS 5890.
CDS 5890 Thesis
Arranged, 1-6 credit hours. (Credit/No Credit) NOTE: A maximum of nine credit hours may be earned in a combination of CDS 5850 and CDS 5890.
CDS 5900 Advanced Clinical Practice
Fall, Spring, 1-3 credit hours. Summer, 1-2 credit hours. Supervised work with a variety of speech-language-hearing disorders. Prerequisites: Graduate degree-seeking status or permission of the department chairperson. May be repeated for a maximum of six semester hours.
CDS 5910 Diagnostics in Speech Pathology
Fall, Spring, Summer, 1 credit hour. Supervised diagnostic evaluations with a variety of speech-language-hearing disorders. Prerequisites: Graduate degree-seeking status or permission of the department chairperson. The course may be repeated for a maximum of 2 semester hours of credit.
CDS 5920 Audiology Clinical Practicum
Fall, Spring, Summer, 1 credit hour. Supervised diagnostic evaluations and/or rehabilitation with a variety of auditory disorders. Prerequisites: Graduate degree-seeking status or permission of the department chairperson.
CDS 5970 Educational Internship
Fall, Spring, 12 credit hours. (Credit/No Credit) Clinical experience in a school setting approved by the department. To be taken credit/no credit for a maximum of three semester hours applicable to the degree. Prerequisites: Acceptance by the by the educational internship site; completion of all CDS graduate course work except CDS 5890 and CDS 5980, and a grade of B or better in at least six semester hours of CDS 5900, 5910, 5920 or permission of the department chair.
CDS 5980 Medical Internship
Fall, Spring, Summer, 12 credit hours. (Credit/No Credit) Internship experience in a medical setting approved by the department. To be taken credit/no credit for a maximum of three semester hours applicable to the degree. Prerequisites: Acceptance by the medical internship site; completion of all CDS graduate coursework with the exception of CDS 5890 and CDS 5970; and a grade of B or better in at least six hours of CDS 5900, 5910, 5920, or permission of the department chair.
