Brad Olson 2022

Higher Education Art Educator of the Yearbrad olson, art educator 2022

Brad Olson is an artist/educator and Assistant Professor of Art Education at Eastern Illinois University. Dr. Olson has worked with learners of all ages (from pre-school to adulthood) in a diverse range of settings, and is particularly interested in researching the topics of visual culture, new and social media, community-based art learning, and emerging technologies for teaching and art-making. Dr. Olson’s interest in “third space” learning led to his doctoral thesis, "DigArts: A Case Study of Digital Visual Culture, Teenagers, and Tensions in the Third Space". In this case study, he examined how teenagers coalesced into affinity groups both offline and in-person when given a de-structured physical learning environment. Today, he enjoys sharing research with teachers on ways to easily bring technologies of virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence into the art classroom. As artist, he is inspired by many things – remote places and people, natural histories, folklore, and music, to name a few. Brad is drawn to intersections: between popular culture and fine art, digital and traditional media, and the natural and technical worlds. A major part of his work is focused on creating gig posters, album art, music videos, and other media for friends and local musicians in his community. He enjoys working with processes of illustration, photography, digital manipulation, collage, and animation.

The 17,000 square-foot exhibition teaches kids about creative problem solving and reveals their unique strengths through a variety of interactive challenges. Crayola IDEAWorks™ derives from the acronym: I – Identify, D – Define, E – Explore, and A – Assess, outlining the design thinking process.

The exhibition will remain in Philadelphia for 2021, and travel for several years after that.
