Tania Ward Student Success Fund
The Tania Ward Student Success Fund was established to honor the life, service, and enduring legacy of Tania Ward, a beloved educator, mentor, and advocate for students at Eastern Illinois University.
Tania believed deeply in students’ potential and worked tirelessly to remove barriers that stood in the way of their academic success. This fund carries forward her commitment to meeting students with compassion, validation, and practical support—especially at moments when a modest financial obstacle could otherwise disrupt persistence or course completion.
Through one-time awards of up to $350, the fund provides targeted assistance to help students remain academically engaged, meet course requirements, and continue progressing toward graduation. These awards are intended to address short-term academic expenses that are essential for student success but not always covered through traditional financial aid.
Eligible Uses
Funds may be used for academic-related expenses such as:
Required Technology & Access
- Software or platform access codes required for a course (e.g., statistical software, design tools, publisher homework platforms)
- Course-required digital subscriptions or online learning tools not covered by standard fees
- Required proctoring or online exam platform fees
Course Materials Beyond Textbooks
- Course packets or printed materials required by instructors
- Specialized instructional materials for studio, performance, or practicum-based courses
- Required workbooks or consumable learning materials
Clinical, Field, & Experiential Learning Costs
- Background checks or compliance fees required for clinicals, student teaching, internships, or practica
- Immunizations, titers, or health clearances required for program participation
- Uniforms or required attire specific to academic programs (e.g., scrubs, lab coats)

Assessment & Credentialing Support
- Program-required assessments or competency exams tied to course progression
- Practice exams or preparation materials when required by the academic program
- Certification-related fees when directly tied to course completion or graduation requirements
Accessibility & Academic Engagement
- Adaptive or assistive academic tools required to engage in coursework
- Printing or copying costs for required course materials when digital access is insufficient
- Course-required presentation or project materials (e.g., poster printing)
Academic Continuity Needs
- Replacement of required academic materials lost due to unexpected circumstances (e.g., damaged lab manual or broken calculator essential for a course)
- Short-term academic expenses necessary to prevent course withdrawal or delayed completion
Other course-related academic expenses must be clearly connected to a student’s ability to remain enrolled, participate fully in coursework, or complete academic requirements. Requests are reviewed with an emphasis on academic necessity and student success.

Tania Ward’s life was defined by her love for students, her unwavering belief in their capacity to thrive, and her gentle yet powerful presence on campus. As an EIU alumna, faculty advisor, and co-pastor of Acts Campus Ministry, she created spaces where students felt seen, safe, and supported—often believing in them before they believed in themselves. This fund reflects that same spirit: meeting students where they are, affirming their worth, and offering timely support that can make a lasting difference.
