The purpose of the High School Rural Teacher Corps is to create a network of middle and high schools that identify and recruit 6-12th grade students to become teachers and return to our rural communities.

Activity/Opportunities
The High School Rural Teacher Corps sponsors met on April 20, 2022. |
As always, the topic was how to engage high school students to become teachers. Our guest was Jennifer Kirmes from ISBE who provided a brief update to ISBE initiatives to address the teacher shortage. We provided some feedback and ideas to her. The primary outcome is that the group requested EIU host a half day event for high school students to come to campus and meet with preservice students, faculty and even new teachers. This will be in fall (likely September). We will convene interested members of our group in May to discuss this event. If you would like to participate, please contact Brian Reid (bdreid2@eiu.edu). *Jennifer Kirmes is the Executive Director of Teaching & Learning for the Illinois State Board of Education where she supports ISBE's departments of Educator Effectiveness, Curriculum & Instruction, and CTE & Innovation. In this role she has worked extensively to develop and implement policies and initiatives to strengthen and diversify the Illinois educator pipeline and elevate educators. Prior to joining ISBE staff, Dr. Kirmes served as the Principal & CEO of Amandla Charter School for six years, and before that was Principal of Bowen High School in Chicago Public Schools. |
