EMC Auditions

Auditions are handled by each area of EMC independently. All campers will audition for ensemble placement/part assignments on their first day of camp, shortly after arriving on campus.

Jazz Camp Auditions

Jazz campers will play a short audition on Sunday afternoon for placement into a jazz ensemble.  Auditions will consist of:
  1. Your favorite major scale, one or two octaves, ascending and descending, at a consistent tempo.
  2. The music (listed below) for your instrument.  Play the excerpt at a consistent tempo that is comfortable for you.  Accuracy is always more important than speed.
  3. A brief excerpt to sightread (provided at the audition).
  4. (Optional) An improvised chorus or two on a selection of your choice.
Saxophone: Blues Etude  and (optional) Blues Changes with alto and bari backing track or tenor backing track
Trumpet: Blue Seven  or Tenor Madness
Trombone: Blues in Hoss Flat​, measures 20-45
Guitar: Blue Bossa , one octave scale in first position  and (optional) moveable scales in two octaves  and 15 parent voicings
Piano: Blue Bossa  
Bass: Bass Excerpts
Drums: Drum Excerpts and 16 bars of each of the following styles: medium swing at quarter = 132;  fast swing at quarter = 212; bossa nova; funk groove
