EIU Educator Preparation

Become an Educator

Eastern Illinois University has been preparing educators ever since 1895, when the Eastern Illinois Normal College was founded to deliver a two-year program to train teachers for the schools in East Central Illinois.

Now, 125 years later, EIU continues to prepare teachers in 24 distinct initial licensure areas spanning all grade levels and encompassing all major content areas.

Additionally, the University also prepares School Service Personnel to serve as counselors, psychologists, and speech language pathologists, and leaders for schools, districts, and special education programs.

Whether you plan to start at EIU as a freshman, transfer to EIU from a community college or other institution, or start graduate school for advanced study, we are here to support your desire to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispostions to be a 21st-century educator.

We welcome you to use the resources on this website as you explore your options here at EIU, and encourage you to contact the individuals listed on the pages within for more information or assistance as you consider EIU.
