EIU General Studies Degree Program

Advisors' Welcome

We would like to introduce ourselves and welcome you to the BA in General Studies degree program. We are program advisors available to discuss your evaluation, assist you in choosing classes, and answer any questions you may have as you work towards graduation.

Included in the New Student Information is a degree audit, presenting a summary of your completed and remaining hours as well as graduation requirements. Please notice the BGS 2985 course listed on the degree audit. This is a required orientation course designed to assist our students with their transition into the university format and the accompanying regimen of taking classes, as well as acclimating them to B.A. in General Studies policies and procedures. Before registering for classes your first semester, please contact us via email or telephone so we can help you register for the next available BGS 2985 class.

We strongly encourage you to join the School of Continuing Education Listserv in order to: 1) receive notification of off-campus schedule release dates, 2) stay informed of class additions and/or cancellations throughout the semester, and 3) to receive other important program announcements. Information about the listserv and instructions for joining can be found online.

You have been assigned an academic advisor, but you may email or call anyone in our office to assist you.

Kim Redfern, an academic advisor, is on the main campus in Charleston, IL.  Those office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. You can reach Kim by calling 217-581-5618.

Jackie Janesku, an academic advisor, is located in the Chicago area, and divides her time between various locations in Chicagoland. You can reach Jackie at 217-549-3347 or by email at

We also have advisors available at our Parkland Office in Champaign. Lori Brewer, an academic advisor, and Dr. Johnson, the program director, work out of that office. You can reach them at 217-353-2255 or by email

If you need assistance from any advisor, email and someone will get back to you as soon as possible.

Again welcome to the program! We encourage you to make an appointment to meet with us soon. Please do not hesitate to call us if we can assist you in any way as you work toward degree completion and graduation.
