Transfer Students in Undergraduate CDS Program

It is possible for transfer students to successfully complete the undergraduate CDS program in 2, 2.5, or 3 years. For a variety of reasons, faculty recommend the 3-year option as optimal and suggest the 2-year option is most challenging. Many courses are offered in sequence and only once per year, therefore beginning the program in a fall term is strongly recommended.  Please see bulleted points and sample course sequences below to see differences based on time in the program at EIU.

Transferring into CDS Program at Beginning of Sophomore Year (3 year option)

  • Distribution of required CDS coursework interspersed with general education requirements and other elective courses
    • 5 CDS courses Sophmore Year, 5 CDS courses Junior Year, and 7 CDS courses Senior Year
      • Possibility of studying abroad, if desired, during spring of junior year
      • Possibility of completing a minor
      • Possibility of participating in departmental honors program.
      • Clincial experiences early in program helps learn to apply coursework
    • Undergraduate clinical shadowing experience in CDS 3900 and undergraduate clinical practicum (CDS 4900)

Transferring into CDS Program at Beginning of Junior Year (2-Year Option)

  •  Condensed, very heavy load of CDS coursework especially senior year
    • Pre-requisites and course sequences result in 5 CDS courses that can be taken during the junior year and 11 CDS courses that must be taken during senior year
  • Some students' major GPAs (and comprehension of course content) are negatively affected by taking so many rigorous CDS courses each term
  •  Must waive Undergraduate Clinical Practicum experience (CDS 4900) with the 2 year program in CDS at EIU-- Therefore do not have experience of treating a client as an undergraduate
    • Prerequisites and course sequences do not allow CDS 4900 to be completed in 2 years
  • Condensed program does not allow time for opportunities such as studying abroad (other than a summer option), completing a minor, or participating in the departmental honor's program

Transferring into CDS Program at Beginning of Junior Year and Extending Program by One Semester (2.5-Year Option)

  • Compared to the 2-year option, allows for CDS 4900 (undergraduate clinical practicum) and a slightly less rigorous senior year by adding the extra semester
    • 5 CDS courses junior year, 9 CDS courses senior year, and 3 CDS courses including undergraduate clinical practicum in extra fall term.
  • Would not allow for opportunities such as departmental honors
  • Most graduate programs begin in Summer or Fall term.
    • If graduate in December, could work or volunteer during spring
