Welcome to The Department of Student Teaching and Clinical Experiences

Eastern Illinois University is proud of its fine reputation for preparing teachers. All teacher education programs at EIU are fully and nationally accredited. Practical experience with learners in school settings is a vital component of our teacher education programs. From classroom observation to small group teaching, straight through to practicum and student teaching, EIU students receive many opportunities to develop into teachers in their chosen field of expertise. Please contact our office if you have questions about student teaching or clinical experiences.
Sincerely,
Patricia S. Poulter, Ed.D.

The Teacher Education site is your best source of information regarding Admission to Teacher Education and Application to Student Teach. You are urged to bookmark the site, as it is a valuable resource for all teacher education candidates. This site includes all announced meeting dates, as well as testing information for selection and certification.
Every student planning to student teach must formally apply at the Application to Student Teach meeting. This meeting is held ONLY during the Fall semester preceding the academic year in which the student plans to student teach. Meeting dates are published in The Daily Eastern News, University Newsletter, and are posted throughout campus. All application materials received at that meeting must be completed and turned in to the Office of Student Teaching, 2418 Buzzard Hall, by the announced deadline date. Failure to attend a meeting to apply to student teach or failure to complete the application materials by the deadline will result in a minimum of a one-year delay in student teaching.
Student Teaching placements are made by a Student Teaching coordinator assigned to the student teacher. Self-placement is not allowed. Self-placement will result in placement being deferred to a subsequent semester. After a placement is made, a request to change student teaching to a different place or semester is unusual and approved only under extraordinary circumstances. Approval can only be given by the Office of Student Teaching
All Teacher Preparation programs require observation and teaching in public school settings prior to the Student Teaching Semester. General information is available here to help you make the most of your clinical experiences.
A candidate can have excellent content knowledge, but if s/he does not display positive dispositions for successful teaching and learning, the candidate will not be successful in the professionl of teaching. Please follow this link to find out more about EIU's Dispositions for Educators.
