Student Spotlight

Meet STEP’s Spotlight Student, Mark!

Mark Codo
Mark is a senior at EIU with a major in television and video production and minor in music. He has been in the STEP program during all four years at Eastern. In addition to being involved with STEP, Mark has become a popular 'voice' around campus. He works as an on-air DJ and personality for the Hit Mix 88.9 WEIU radio station. When he's not playing his favorite throwback music on WEIU, you can probably find Mark working at Taylor Dining Hall. He works approximately 8.5 hours each week between the dining hall and radio station, all while being a full-time student. Mark is also involved with multiple registered student organizations such as Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, which is a music fraternity on campus. He also volunteers as a cameraman for WEIU's News Watch.

In general, Mark gives STEP credit for being a resource and contributor to his success at EIU. STEP helped Mark consistently balance his schedule to ensure he continued to be both an exemplar student and employee. After he graduates in May 2021, Mark plans to pursue his dream job of joining a production crew on a major film. We truly enjoy working with Mark and can't wait to see what his future holds!

Meet STEP’s Spotlight Student, Shawn!

Shawn Student SpotlightShawn, originally from Aurora, IL., is currently in his second semester here at EIU. Before starting in the fall of 2020, Shawn earned an Associate’s degree from the Motion Picture Television Department at the College of DuPage. As Shawn began the transfer process to EIU, he knew he wanted to continue developing his specialized skills, which led him to pursue a Bachelor’s in Television and Video Production.

Since being at EIU, Shawn has taken advantage of multiple opportunities to expand his knowledge. Currently, he is enrolled in an internship class that partners with Disney’s ESPN and EIU Athletics. This class is only offered to four students a semester, and Shawn was chosen for it! For 40 hours of this semester, Shawn will be manning the live video cameras and online scoreboard that viewers from all across the globe will see on their TVs! Not only has this internship allowed Shawn to understand more about his intended field of study, but it has also pushed him to fine-tune his professional communication skills. Shawn says STEP has helped him both with this class, and college as a whole.

Shawn says that STEP has helped him become confident in himself and how to be social in the college setting. Most importantly, with the help of STEP, Shawn has squashed the habit of not turning in assignments at the very last minute, and instead now focuses on planning out assignments/tasks, sticking to that plan, and completing it with ample time to turn it in.

When asked what he would say to future students of STEP, Shawn simply replied, “Don’t doubt yourself… STEP is here to help improve you socially and with any anxiety.”
