A few things to note:

• In areas where wireless is available throughout the building, it is possible that some areas and corners of rooms have very low or nonexistent wireless signal.  This can have many causes including, but certainly not limited to : number of people in an area, furniture and rooms rearranged from now and the time wireless was put in - microwaves, TVs, and other wireless devices causing interference with the signal.
• EIU’s campus has not been fitted with wireless access outside of buildings.  You might be outside of your residence hall or academic building and have some wifi access.  However, that access is bleed-over from the access points inside the closest building. If you walk down the sidewalk from building to building, your device will gain and lose access as you move around.  In some instances, the buildings are close enough together that you would not notice the change because your device would connect to the next buildings access point before you lose full access from the previous building.  In other instances, for example if you walk across the quad or from Coleman hall to Booth Library, you will get too far away from any access point and your device will completely drop its wireless connection. When you get close enough to a building or enter a building that has wireless access, your device will then connect to the wireless network again.
• There are occasions where laptops/desktops have configuration issues causing slow or poor internet connection.  A good way to tell if the problem is with the device itself is to try connecting in multiple locations.  If you have similarly poor experiences in each location, the problem is likely with the device.  If you have great connectivity in one location and poor connectivity in another (assuming it is not in the middle of the quad or within buildings that do not have wifi throughout), it’s likely an issue of too many people trying to connect to one access point or an issue with the EIUWifi service.

In all instances, we do have people here to help.  We encourage everyone to contact Campus Technology Support or ResNet Support (if the problem is occurring in the residence halls) so that we may troubleshoot the issue and help improve the wireless experience for everyone.  If we are not made aware of the issue, it is very difficult for us to resolve them.
