Advisement for Clinical Counseling Majors

Please sign your study plan + handbook agreement form following your advising meeting

1. Although it is still early, start thinking about what kind of work you would like to do in the future (Who would you like to work with (children, adults, substance use, residential, community, etc.?) Knowing where you would like to end up can guide your practicum and internship experiences. You will start applying for practicum positions about half way through your first semester so start thinking about where you may want to apply early!

2. You have the option of taking one or two classes the summer before you begin your first official year in the program in the Fall (not required) to lighten your load during the time you take NCE. Your options include Professional Orientation (CHE 5510), and Theories of Counseling (CHE 5520).

3. Please refer to the rotation of classes document. Courses scheduled the first and third semester are always offered in the fall. Courses scheduled the second and fourth semester are always offered in the spring. Additional offerings may occur (such as Advanced Play Therapy, CHE 5645, offered during spring of your second year) but check with your advisor, especially if you are parttime.

4. The following describes the sequence of several courses which require outside of class clinical practice. You will not be able to register for these classes on your own – the department will register you for these courses and will place you in the appropriate section.

Basic Skills (CHE 5330) – at least 5 counseling sessions outside of class with other classmates on campus (may total up to 15 sessions over the course of the semester, 5 as the counselor, 5 as the observer, and 5 as the client). First semester, first year.

Practicum (CHE 5630) – 100 hours over the course of the semester, 40 hours must be direct service. Ten hours are from group counseling experience. (Usually, 8 to 10 hours a week on site) Two and a half hours in class and 1 hour supervision with instructor outside of class. Second semester, first year.

Internship (CHE 6900, 6901, 6902) – 300 hours over the course of the semester, 120 must be direct service. Your first internship (CHE 6900), will take place the summer after your first year: 40 hours per week. Your second and third internships will take place during your second year (CHE 6901 – Fall, and CHE 6902 – Spring): 20 hours per week. Class usually meets twice a month for 2 and ½ hours.

6. Filming will be required for many of your courses, but especially for Basic Skills, Practicum, and Internship. While the department has recording equipment for on campus filming, you will be required to film offcampus at your practicum/internship sites. As such, please ensure that you have access to some way to film (video andaudio),and a secure locationt o store these files. Some flash drives can be password protected for added security. All recordings MUST be kept confidential
