Master of Science in BCT

The Master of Science in Biochemistry and Biotechnology (BCT) program is an advanced interdisciplinary program between the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Business for students interested in pursuing a career in Biochemistry and Biotechnology.

Students will gain skill sets to improve products and services through molecular, chemical, biological and analytical techniques while also being trained in the fundamental business strategies to succeed in the fast paced field of biotechnology and medical services.

Students that complete the BCT program will (1) demonstrate an understanding of fundamental principles and applications of laboratory techniques and instrumentation, (2) be able to critically analyze a breadth of biochemical problems and experimental results, (3) be familiar with computer applications in biochemistry and biotechnology, (4) be able to properly utilize chemical information sources, (5) be able to apply the scientific method of investigation, and (6) be able to communicate technical material effectively.

Job Opportunities

The program size and design facilitates the personal development of students using the combined expertise of faculty from the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Business. Highly specialized techniques-based courses will train students in the most modern approaches to scientific problem solving while giving them the academic foundations they will need to succeed in the emerging national and global markets.

Internships

The capstone of this program is an Internship experience. This requirement can be completed using an internal internship (at EIU), an external internship (recommended) or a combination of these two options. The internship experience will give you a hands-on, end-point driven, and industry-relevant experience that will aid in securing a job in your chosen field.

Flexible Curriculum

The curriculum of the BCT program includes 34 semester hours (SH) from three different groups of courses: required core courses (19 SH), electives (9 SH), and the internship experience(s) (6 SH). These credits will be obtained from the Departments of Biological Sciences (BIO), Chemistry and Biochemistry (CHM), Business (MBA), and the Biochemistry/Biotechnology Program (BCT).
