AFSCME, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, is the largest union for workers in public service with 1.6 million members nationwide. AFSCME organizes for social and economic justice in the workplace and through political action and legislative advocacy. Here at EIU, AFSCME represents workers who have a variety of jobs, including library workers, food service workers, building maintenance and service workers, mail messengers, office support staff, clerks, and more.
Being a card carrying member entitles you to voting rights for all union elections, the right to participate in union activities, surveys, functions, and to union scholarships and benefits. Non-members receive the same representation and wages, but they are unable to vote or bring individual points of view to the membership. Showing up, with a stronger membership, speaks volumes at the bargaining table.
Please contact an officer for a membership card and we will be happy to answer any questions!
