In this three-class series, artist Dave Hunter will use his thirty years of experience working with hot glass to lead students through several beginner-friendly glass-making processes. Each workshop will build on the previous, and students will complete a small glass project in each class.

EVENT SCHEDULE

Lampworking 1: Beadmaking will focus on familiarizing students with basic glass chemistry, the torch, safety concerns, various tools of the trade, getting the feel of glass properties when hot vs. cold, and creating the basic round beads that are the building blocks of most forms of lampwork. Students will finish one bead by the end of class and pick it up the following week.

Lampworking 2: Whale Tail will focus on helping students refine their basic beadmaking skills and then introduce them to making cylindrical beads as a base for sculptural forms. Students will complete a small glass whale tail by the end of class and pick it up the following week. Lampworking 1 is required.

Lampworking 3: Seascape will teach students how to apply silver foil to the tips of ivory glass rods, melting the foil in and then pulling stringers from it to create what is known as SIS (silver ivory stringers). Students will then be taught how to use a combination of pastel ivory and transparent blue glass to create a “seascape” bead, decorating the “water’s edge” with SIS, as well as how to use a clear stinger to create optional swirls along the line where the beach and water meet. Students will complete a small glass seascape and pick it up the following week. Lampworking 1 and 2 are required.
