The University Police Department is a member of the East Central Illinois Drug Task Force, which is comprised of 7 law enforcement agencies responsible for street level investigations. The department receives its dispatching and Emergency 911 service from CECOM.
R.A.D. Rape Aggression Defense
The University Police will be hosting a RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) course during the months of November and December. RAD is a 12 hour self-defense course for women. The class will be spread over three days each month. There is no cost for the program. If you have taken the course and wish to repeat portions or missed a session we would be happy to have you join us again.
On the first day we collect some information from you including contact and medical information so we are aware of any medical conditions and who should be contacted in case of an emergency. You will be issued a manual and we will cover some safety issues that you might encounter through travel, campus-life, social settings, and other activities.
Day two will be the fun stuff! You will learn stances, blocks, strikes, and kicks. We teach how and where to deliver the force and you will get to practice on strike pads. We provide gloves, knee pads, head gear and elbow pads.
The third day consists of scenario-based activities. You will get to use what you have learned on some instructors. Striking a person is a lot different than striking a bag or strike pads.
The class will begin at 6:00 p.m. (Friday, 11/11/2011 and Friday 12/16/2011) in the conference room located on the upper level of the Student Recreation Center. The class will run until 9:00 p.m. The second day (Saturday, the 12th or the 17th) will start at noon and we will be use the Dance Studio located near the lower entrance of the Rec Center. This session will end at about 6:00 p.m. and you should wear workout clothing and bring a bag lunch and drink with you to the class. On day three (Sunday, the 13th or the 18th) we will meet again in the Dance Studio area for our simulation exercises. Class will start at noon and we should be done by about 3:00 p.m.

The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. We provide each student with a workbook/reference manual. This manual outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth, and is the key to our free lifetime return and practice policy for R.A.D. graduates.
Please take the time to talk to our R.A.D. Instructors. Fill out a card of interest in person or print one online so that we can let you know when we will be conducting the next class. Please contact us with any questions you may have concerning R.A.D. at (217) 581-3213.
