Eastern Illinois University's Department of Student Teaching and Clinical Experiences is proud of its fine reputation for preparing teachers. All teacher education programs at EIU are fully and nationally accredited. Practical experience with learners in school settings is a vital component of our teacher education programs.
From classroom observation to small group teaching, straight through to practicum and student teaching, EIU students receive many opportunities to develop into teachers in their chosen field of expertise. Are You Planning to Student Teach in Fall 2017 or Spring 2018?
We are now accepting applications to student teach in Fall 2017 and Spring 2018. To begin your application please follow the instructions in the box to the right. When completing the application process it is very important that you read the modules prior to the actual application very carefully. The deadline for Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 applications to student teach is October 31, 2016.
Attention Spring 2017 Student Teachers
Sign Up for Pre-Placement Meeting - On Friday, August 19th we will begin sign-ups for pre-placement meetings for candidates planning to student teach in Spring 2017. Sign-ups will take place in 1420 Buzzard Hall (Dean’s Office College of Education & Professional Studies) Monday-Friday from 8-4:30. There will be a notebook with tabs for each of the coordinators. Find the tab for your coordinator and sign up for a time that fits your schedule. The deadline to sign up Tuesday, August 30th. The actual pre-placement meetings will take place on Thursday, September 8th. Pre-placement meetings are your opportunity to meet with your assigned student teaching coordinator and discuss student teaching in general and the parameters of your student teaching placement. If you are not taking on campus classes this Fall you may contact Mary Mattingly at 217-581-2620 for assistance.
Prior to your pre-placement meeting on September 8th it is very important that you log into your student teaching application (https://www.eiu.edu/apps/student_teaching/login.php ) and update your materials including but not limited to your personal information, education information (especially GPA), resume, and your transcript. Once you are finished, simply click save and finish later on the main screen. You do not need to click “click her to complete your file” . If get a message that your file is locked please email Dr. Doug Bower and he will unlock it for you.
Sign Up for Fingerprinting - Also, all candidates planning to student teach in Spring 2017 must complete another fingerprint based Criminal History Check no later than October 5, 2016 (unless you were fingerprinted through EIU on or after January 1, 2016). Technicians are on campus every week from August 23 up until mid-term but you must sign up for an appointment. Sign ups for fingerprinting begin Friday, August 19th in 1420 Buzzard Hall (Dean’s Office College of Education & Professional Studies) from 8-4:30.
Register for Content Tests- Don’t forget that in accordance with state law all candidates must pass the content test(s) in their field prior to beginning student teaching. For Spring 2017, EIU must have official scores documenting passage of the appropriate content test(s) no later than December 9th. Please note that all content tests are only offered in a computer based format at one of the Pearson Vue Centers. Go to www.icts.nesinc.com for more information about test dates, formats, and registration information. EIU is a test site, contact the Office of Testing and Evaluation (http://www.eiu.edu/acatest/ ) for additional information. For questions about which test(s) you are required to pass prior to student teaching please contact your advisor or program teacher education coordinator. Elementary Education Candidates please remember that you should register for Test 110-Elementary/Middle Grades.
Spring 2017 Student Teachers Planning to Student Teach in Chicago Public Schools
If your coordinator has asked you to complete the application to student teach in Chicago Public Schools please go the the following website https://pcpsep.epm.cps.edu/sites/STI/index.htm . Review the material required and once the application period opens use the student teacher registration link to complete your application. Student Teaching Application for Fall 2017/ Spring 2018 is now open
We are now accepting student teaching applications for Fall 2017 and Spring 2018. The deadline to submit your application is October 31, 2016.
Every student planning to student teach must formally apply. To complete the application you will need a current transcript (PAWS transcript is fine), an up-to-date resume (saved as a pdf), and a writing sample addressing specific criteria (saved as a pdf). If you need assistance with preparing your resume please contact Career Services. Finally, specification/requirements for the writing sample can be found by clicking here.
