EIU Knowmia

As previously announced, Techsmith is discontinuing its Knowmia enterprise service. Therefore, the Knowmia service at EIU will terminate on May 31, 2021.  After May 31, you will no longer be able to access Knowmia or any of the videos you have created or uploaded to the system.  If you have videos in Knowmia you want to save, we recommend downloading the videos from Knowmia and uploading to Katura. Until May 31, you can log in to your EIU Knowmia account at using your EIU netID and password.  
How to download video from your Knowmia library:
  1. Sign in to Knowmia at
  2. Click on the video to open.
  3. From the video watch page, click More (to the right of the title below the video), then select Download.
  4. The video appears in your Downloads folder as an MP4 file.
    Note: Any quizzing, conversations, captions, or analytics does not appear in the downloaded MP4 file.
How to export the transcript of the captions from a Knowmia video: 
  1. Sign in to Knowmia at
  2. Click on the video to open.
  3. Select the Accessibility tab below the video. 
  4. Select the pencil icon to edit (to the left of the publish button).
  5. Select Export in the upper right corner.  
  6. Select the down arrow in the Exporting Captions box and choose WebVTT (.vtt) from the drop-down list.
  7. The file will be exported to your downloads folder.

EIU was alerted that Techsmith will be shutting down its Knowmia service permanently. For EIU this likely means Knowmia will no longer be available after the Spring 2021 semester. We are extremely disappointed by this announcement. Thank you for supporting new technology at EIU and we apologize that in this case we weren't able to fully launch the new tool. What is Knowmia?

TechSmith Knowmia (formerly Relay) is a video creation and sharing platform that helps maximize student engagement in online courses. You can create and upload your own videos, pull content from YouTube or Ted Talks, and embed quizzing for added accountability as well as conversations for added engagement.



Knowmia features provide access to:

  • An online library where you can store as many videos as you’d like.

  • A web-based recorder to easily create new videos of yourself and your screen.

  • A convenient way to access, manage, and share your Knowmia videos from inside your D2L Brightspace course.

  • An easy way to add ADA complied closed captioning to your videos. 

  • A simple way to add Quizzes and/or a threaded Conversation to any videos.

  • A free mobile app (TechSmith Fuse) that allows you to import any video content from your phone right into your Knowmia Library.
