John Surratt's attorneys Joseph H. Bradley, Sr., Joseph H. Bradley, Jr., and Richard T. Merrick worked to put doubt into the witnesses that placed Surratt in Washington D.C. on the night of President Lincoln's assassination. By retracing their client's steps, Surratt's attorneys were able to produce witnesses that placed him in Elmira.
