The faculty and university's primary emphasis is on teaching.  All faculty have the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) and have worked as speech-language pathologists or audiologists. This results in classes being clinically applicable so that students are well-prepared professionals when they graduate. The CDS Department has 14 full-time faculty members who teach courses and supervise in the EIU Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic.  Additionally, the Dean of the College of Sciences (Dr. Mary Anne Hanner), the Dean of the Graduate School (Dr. Robert Augustine) and the Vice President for External Relations (Dr. Jill Nilsen) are tenured faculty in CDS.  The faculty have expertise in areas of Autism, language processing, developmental disorders/language, literacy, cognitive communication disorders, fluency, and service delivery in the schools.  The faculty are also very active in professional organizations at the national (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association), state (Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association), and local (East Central Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association) levels.
