Spotlight on Central Illinois

Primary sources such as photographs and veteran stories can bring life to the events and people who were engaged in past wars. Students can explore concepts of values, culture, and discrimination. They can also develop an understanding of the role veterans play in our nation’s history and how veterans have contributed to our country today.

Connecting locally...learn about past central Illinois veterans by analyzing photographs offered through the Library of Congress web site.

The Stars and Stripes The American Soldiers’ Newspaper of World War I, 1918-1919

The Stars and Stripes was published in France by the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) of the United States Army from February 8, 1918, to June 13, 1919. General John J. Pershing wanted a newspaper written by servicemen for the soldiers on the battlefront. The newspaper's mission was to strengthen the morale of the troops and to promote unity within the American forces. The venture was immediately popular with the soldiers, quickly selling out its first issue of one thousand copies. Appearing during a pivotal period in world and American history, The Stars and Stripes is a unique type of newspaper: a military newspaper published by the United States government, documenting the experience of American soldiers during wartime.

American Leaders Speak Recordings from World War I and the 1920 Election

The Nation's Forum recordings were made between 1918 and 1920 in an effort to preserve the voices of prominent Americans; in most cases, they are the only surviving recordings of a speaker. The recordings fall into two distinct series. The 1918 series was devoted mostly to World War I topics and was apparently distributed only to political organizations and other groups. All of the recordings from the 1918 series were pressed on ten-inch discs. The 1919-1920 series was devoted mostly to postwar issues and the 1920 presidential election. The total number of recordings made by the Nation's Forum is unknown. The Library of Congress holds fifty-nine examples in a collection that has been assembled over a period of years from a variety of donors and record collectors.

What's New at LOC.GOV

The Yanks are Coming!

This great exhibit showcases America's love for music during war time. Americans copyrighted more than 35,000 World War I patriotic songs, military marches, love ballads, and protest songs. The lyrics ranged from rallying cries and praises of bravery to pleas for pacifism and celebrations of peace. New tunes were in constant demand by a public who bought sheet music, piano rolls, and the newly-popular phonograph records.

The Most Famous Poster

Believed to be one of the most famous posters in the world, and Uncle Sam being one of the most popular personifications of the United States, this exhibit will take you deeper into making of the Uncle Sam's "I Want You for the U.S. Army" poster. Over four million copies were printed between 1917 and 1918, as the United States entered World War I and began sending troops and material into war zones. The poster was so popular that the image was later used in World War II and is still used today.

Churchill and the Great Republic

This exhibition examines the life and career of Winston Churchill and emphasizes his lifelong links with the United States the nation he called "the Great Republic." This exhibit draws on the unparalleled collection of Churchill materials in the Churchill Archives Centre in Cambridge, England. This is the first time that these materials are exhibited comprehensively in the United States. The exhibition also showcases the remarkable holdings on Churchill and his life in the Library of Congress.
