Quick Start Guide

Thank you for your interest in Civil Service employment at Eastern Illinois University. The following is a guide to using our online application system for Civil Service employment. The system is available 24 hours a day and allows you to create and edit an application, submit your application for review, and check the status of your review. Please note that you must be an Illinois resident to apply for a Civil Service position at Eastern Illinois University.

To begin the application process you must first request an account. Please provide the necessary information and create a password. You will then receive a verification email that will provide your username. You may then login to the online application system using your username and the password you created.

Once logged-in, you will see the application's Main Menu. On this menu you will see three separate steps. The first step will be to edit or complete an application. The application consists of five separate sections. Please complete each section completely and honestly. Required information is denoted by an red box Required Field. Once you have completed a section, you may save your entry and continue with the process by clicking on the icon_forward next button. Unofficial transcripts should be attached if qualifying on the basis of education. Copies of veteran's discharge papers (DD 214 or NGB 22) should be attached if requesting Veterans Preference Points. Cover letters, resumes, reference lists, and copies of special licenses or certifications may also be attached but are not required.

In step two, once you have completed every section of the application, you may submit your application for review. Note: Your application will be reviewed as submitted. Please review your application before submitting. There is a seven day review period. Keep in mind applications may only be submitted once a month, so please make sure all necessary information is complete and up-to-date. You should only need to update your application to make recent additions to your experience. Please keep in mind that this application will be used to evaluate your qualifications for any Civil Service position for which you apply. Be sure it is complete and accurate. Details will be checked.

Step three is viewing the status of your application. You may view this status at any time. The status will let you know where you stand in the review process (e.g. review in progress, qualified/schedule a test, lack one or more qualifications, etc.).

Qualified applicants will be given the opportunity to take exams. Each employment classification has a separate exam but only one application is necessary for multiple exams. Descriptions of job classifications can be viewed at https://www.eiu.edu/humanres/employment/cspositions.php, or in the Employment/Examinations office located in room 2020 of Old Main. Generally, only the top three candidates are scheduled for an interview when a vacancy occurs. It is your responsibility to ensure we have your latest contact information.

You may change your password at any time by clicking on the "Change Password" button on the in the lower right of most pages. If you forget your password, you may request for your password to be emailed to you. If you forget or wish to change your username, you must go to the Human Resources Employment office located in room 2020 of Old Main on Eastern Illinois University's campus. Editing Application

The application consists of five separate sections. Please complete each section completely and honestly. Required information is denoted by an asterisk (*). Once you have completed a section, you may save your entry and continue with the process by clicking on the 'Next' button.

1. Personal Information - This section will ask for basic contact information, such as name, address, email address, and phone number. Primary communication will be through the e-mail address you provide. Please be sure this address is correct and use an account you frequently check.
2. Additional Information - This section includes basic background information such as citizenship, criminal convictions, and previous positions tested for at Eastern Illinois University. A background investigation is conducted on persons selected for security-sensitive positions. A conviction record will not necessarily bar employment. Factors such as time and age of offense, seriousness and nature of the violation, and rehabilitation will be taken into account in terms of the position for which you have applied.
3. Military Service - In this section you will need to provide any military experience you have, including branch of service, date of entry, character of discharge, and date of discharge. If you have no military experience, please skip this section. If you are a veteran, you may be eligible to receive Veterans Preference points on Civil Service examinations if you provide a copy of your discharge papers (DD 214 or NGB 22). This copy should be attached to your application. NOTE: Answer Character of Discharge only if you are requesting Veterans Preference points.
4. Education and Training - Please record your education history beginning with high school education and concluding with highest level of education obtained. You will be asked for information such as school name and location, status of graduation, and degree received. You may also provide information on any special certificates you hold, special training you have received, and special skills you possess. If you are qualifying on the basis of education you will be required to provide transcripts. These transcripts may be unofficial and should be attached with your application.
5. Employment History - Please record your complete employment history, beginning with your most recent employment. Employment history is reviewed to help determine if minimum qualifications are satisfied so it is important to include all current and previous positions held. Be sure to list the name you used for records during each employment. List periods of unemployment for more than three months and state the reason. To complete the Employment section:

  1. To add a new entry, click on the 'Add' button. The next page will include fields where you can indicate information about a previous or current employer.
  2. Once you have provided all the necessary information, click on the 'Next' button to save the entry and continue.
  3. Repeat steps one and two for all previous employment experience.

6. Attachments - Upload files such as resume, transcript, discharge papers etc... These files need to be in one of the following formats: .doc, .docx, .pdf, .rtf, .txt. The files must also be less than 8mb in size. If requesting Veterans Preference Points you must email a copy of your discharge papers (DD 214 or NGB 22) to the same address. You may also send a cover letter, resume, and reference list. These items are not required. Copies of any special licenses or certifications may also be included.
