A dentist is a doctor, scientist and clinician dedicated to the highest standards of health through prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases and conditions.
Dentists play a key role in the early detection of oral cancer and other systemic conditions of the body that manifest themselves in the mouth. They often identify other health conditions, illnesses, and other problems that sometimes show up in the oral cavity before they are identified in other parts of the body.
Dental schools are seeking individuals who are well rounded in their educational background. In selecting a major, identify one that will prepare you best for dental practice or a backup plan. English, biology, chemistry, psychology or psychology with a business minor are a few majors to consider. Because of the hands-on nature of the profession, courses in art and sculpting are also useful.
Dentistry is a highly competitive four-year graduate program. To be a competitive applicant, students must maintain a high grade point average, score well on the Dental Admission Test (DAT), and acquire some experience in the field. Students typically apply through a centralized application service (AADSAS) in the late spring of their junior year to enter dental school in the fall following graduation.
