Curriculum News
Significant developments include expansion of the offerings in travel/tourism; addition of a variety of new courses such as World Leisure: A Cultural Perspective, Festival and Special Events, Planning and Design of Leisure Facilities; active partnership in the creation of a travel and tourism elective course listing; and strengthening of the major by adding a required business class course listing. The department maintains its longstanding commitment to applied learning experiences, whether through fieldwork, internship, or student research activities. Key developments here include participation in Special Olympics, organizing the annual homecoming race and creation of a recently established student display of scholarly activities. The Department has a strong faculty reputation that is supported by high quality professors—e.g., the March 2003 external review report rating of the department’s faculty are “accessible, available, and committed to the students. Students mentioned a ‘family atmosphere’ between themselves and faculty in the unit.” EIU Faculty/Evaluation reports of Purdue University core items consistently indicate median scores over 4.5 out of 5.
