The Entrepreneurship option is designed for students who want to create, grow or reinvent businesses in hospitality and tourism. Students develop industry knowledge through courses in lodging operations, food science and sanitation, nutrition, meetings and events, destination management, sustainability, business law, professionalism and hospitality leadership.
The curriculum also includes financial accounting and principles of management, along with an 18-hour Entrepreneurship minor. Together, these courses help students understand both the guest experience and the business decisions behind a successful venture. Electives allow students to explore hospitality sales and service, club management, weddings, conventions and trade shows, tourism, sport and recreation programming or study abroad.
Students graduate with at least two career-related work experiences, including a 6-to-9-credit industry internship. Learning labs, field trips, guest speakers, professional conferences, student organizations and industry events provide opportunities to test ideas and understand how hospitality organizations work. EIU’s close faculty guidance and Hospitality and Tourism Advisory Council give students access to people who understand both current industry challenges and emerging opportunities.
