Overview

The 2D Studio Art B.F.A. is designed for students who want to make art the center of their undergraduate experience. You will build broad foundations in drawing, two- and three-dimensional design, painting, sculpture and art history, then devote substantial time to advanced work in drawing, life drawing, painting, watercolor, printmaking and digital art. Studio instruction emphasizes creative exploration, craftsmanship, design principles, safe processes and the ability to discuss and evaluate your work.

At EIU, small studio classes allow faculty to understand your goals and help you develop a focused body of work rather than simply complete a series of assignments. You will work in dedicated drawing and painting studios, an advanced painting studio, a non-toxic printmaking studio, computer labs and public exhibition spaces in the Doudna Fine Arts Center. Professional-practice coursework, critiques, juried exhibitions, student art sales and your capstone B.F.A. solo exhibition help you learn how artists prepare, present and speak about their work. The nearby Tarble Museum of Art, visiting artists, trips, student organizations and study abroad options add regular opportunities to connect your studio practice with the wider art world.
