Rosemary A. Buck holds a Ph.D. in linguistics from Northwestern University, where she specialized in linguistic stylistics, informed by theories in discourse analysis and pragmatics. Her early work appears in such places as Style, Journal of Pragmatics, and Twentieth-Century Fiction: From Text to Context. Inspired by her teacher and mentor, Beth Levin, Dr. Buck has also published articles in the area of lexical semantics, which appear in American Speech, Word: Journal of the International Linguistic Association, and Women and Language. Her current research interests continue in this area. Dr. Buck regularly teaches courses in grammar and language theory (structure, history, general linguistics, language and gender), and she has taught special topics courses in Old English, Women in Old English Literature, Discourse Analysis, and Stylistics. She participates regularly in pedagogical debates about the art of grammar, the role of grammar in the English curriculum, and methods in teaching grammar: essays appear in a variety of journals including California English and English Today: International Review of the English Language. Dr. Buck is the co-founder of Eastern Illinois University’s Medieval Studies Committee and subsequent Interdisciplinary Minor in Medieval Studies. She performs regularly in Collegium Musicum, Consort, EIU’s instrumental ensemble of Medieval and Renaissance Music.
