Research & Creative Interests

Dr. Hubbard’s research reflects his principal intellectual interest in the social analysis of 19th-century US politics and political culture, with a particular emphasis on the intersections of race, class and political development. He came to EIU in 1999, after teaching stints at John Jay College–CUNY, and the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Bronx NY.

His published work has appeared in the Journal of American History, American Nineteenth Century History, Journal of Social History, and Journal of American Studies, among other venues, and his book reviews have appeared in many publications, including the American Historical Review and Reviews in American History. His first book, Beyond Party: Cultures of Antipartisanship in Northern Politics before the Civil War, was published in 2002 by The Johns Hopkins University Press. His latest book, Illinois’s War: THe Civil War in Documents (Ohio University Press), appeared in 2013.
Professor Voss-Hubbard teaches graduate seminars in Historiography, 19th-century US politics, The Civil War Era, and The Early Republic (1789-1848). 

Since January 2014, Professor Hubbard has been Editor of the Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society.
