INTRODUCTION
Ms. Marjorie Hanft joined the psychology department in 1988 after serving as a counselor in EIU's counseling center for two years. Prior to her employment at EIU, she taught English Composition and Literature at the college level and worked in university counseling and substance disorder treatment in a variety of settings. She earned her bachelor's degree from Beloit College and graduate degrees from Brown University and the University of Oklahoma.
During her 27 years in the psychology department, Ms. Hanft taught a broad range of courses including theories of psychotherapy, models of group therapy, abnormal psychology, crisis intervention, and a seminar exploring portrayals of psychopathology in flim and memoir. She also presented on the topics of autism spectrum disorder and bipolar mood disorder at national and state conferences and in school and community mental health settings. Beginning during the 1990's and ending with her retirement, Ms. Hanft coordinated the psychology department's undergraduate internship program.
A recipient of Psi Chi's Outstanding Faculty award on several occasions, Ms. Hanft is proud of the many students she supervised as interns as well as in independent research--some of whom have gone on to pursue graduate degrees and careers in various applied fields in psychology as well as in related fields such as social work, the law, public health, occupational therapy, physical therapy, gerontology, and speech/language pathology.
