Hans
Christian Andersen was born in Odense, Denmark in 1805. He was born
the poor son of a shoemaker. As a child, Hans had
a very low self-esteem and kept to himself with the exception of his father.
Hans had a very special relationship with his father. They both loved
playing with puppets and taking walks, enjoying the simple things in life.
He always encouraged him to follow his dreams. However, his father
died when he was very young. Hans could not deal with all the pressures
at home, so he ran away to Copenhagen. He ran away because he missed
his father, and his mother was not as supportive and loving as his father.
In Copenhagen, he became interseted in theater and attended college at
the University of Copenhagen.
In 1835,
Hans wrote his first collection of fairytales. From then he continued
writing and became famous for them. He contributed so much to children's
literature and also overcame many obstacles in his life, especially his
low self-esteem. He followed his dreams and as a result a statue
stands in Denmark in his honor. His stories still remain classics
even today.
