War was from 1861-1865. In 1845, owning a bathtub in Boston was against
the law unless it was prescribed by a doctor. The first root beer
made in the U.S. was made in Philadelphia in 1866. The ice
cream soda was invented in Philadelphia in 1874. New Bedford was
the world's leading whaling port in the 1800's. The Alcott girls
grew up in New England in these times. Their friends and neighbors
were famous authors, Mr. Emerson, Mr. Thoreau, and Mr. Hawthorne.
