Established in 2014, the Rory and Gail Heltsley Steidl Scholarship was created in honors of the Steidl family who values education and desires to help those in the fields of Elementary Education, Special Education, Nursing, Family and Consumer Sciences, Sociology (Criminal Justice), Journalism, and Kinesiology and Sports Studies. Criteria for selection are as follows: The applicants must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student majoring in the Bachelor of General Studies, Elementary Education, Special Education, Nursing, Family and Consumer Sciences, Sociology (must be enrolled in criminal justice course), Journalism or Kinesiology and Sports Studies and accepted to eastern Illinois University. The recipient must maintain an overall GPA of at least 3.0. The recipients need to be rotated every other year between Charleston High School (Spring 2017) and Kansas High School (Spring 2017) graduates. If no one is eligible, it defaults to the other school. If neither school has eligible students, it will default to other high school in Coles County, followed by schools in surrounding counties. Applicants must submit a 500-word statement with career goals and what the applicant wants to accomplish within their chosen field. Financial need is only a consideration if there is a tie between all other criteria. The recipient(s) may be eligible to apply for the award again provided he/she continues to meet all other criteria. The award shall be announced in the Spring and paid in the following Fall and/or Spring semesters to Eastern Illinois University. The award will be applied first against costs (tuition, fees, housing, etc.) with any remaining amount disbursed to the recipient. The deadline for this scholarship is March 1, 2017.
