Established in 2015, this scholarship was established to memorialize the life and journalistic work of Samantha Middendorf, a former Eastern Illinois University student and Daily Eastern News (DEN) Entertainment Editor. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist journalism students who struggle with financial burden while seeking an undergraduate degree. This scholarship strives to alleviate some of that burden so that students may focus more completely on their education and pursuit of a career in journalism. Criteria for selection are as follows: The recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in journalism accepted to Eastern Illinois University. The recipient must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. If the recipient(s) are incoming student(s) there must be an interest shown in participation with the Daily Eastern News (DEN). Current students must have shown significant participation with The Daily Eastern News (DEN). The recipient must show a commitment to a journalism career by writing a statement of at least 250 words explaining his/her career objectives. Preference is given but not required for volunteer service in fields relating to journalism, writing, education, music, animal welfare, and/or domestic violence programs. Preference given to student(s) with special interest in focusing their academic and career work in entertainment reporting. Financial need may be a consideration as a tie-breaker between recipients that meet all other criteria. The recipient may be eligible to apply for the award again provided he/she continues to meet criteria. There can be up to two awards. The award shall be announced in the spring and paid in the fall semester to Eastern Illinois University to be first applied against costs (tuition, fees, housing, etc. ) associated with the recipient attending Eastern Illinois University.
