John J Rearden, PhD


Dr. Rearden joined the psychology department at EIU in 1968. He began his teaching career at the elementary school level (5th and 6th grade) while he pursued his graduate degrees. Prior to EIU, Dr. Rearden taught education courses at both South Eastern Missouri State College and The University of Kansas at Pittsburgh. His dissertation was titled: "Single trial learning of paired associates."

Dr. Rearden frequently taught Advanced Statistics, Research Methods, Theories of Personality, Psychology of Learning and History of Psychology. His research included aggression studies with both gerbils and fighting fish. Dr. Rearden also assisted graduate students in preparing and publishing their master's theses.

Dr. Rearden is currently the treasurer of the Citizens against Child Abuse, a member of the Charleston Music Boosters, a Democratic 10th precinct committee man, and serves on the Coles County Board of Review. He is also an avid tennis player and master gardener. He and his wife enjoy travelling, having recently toured the Panama Canal.
