EIU Department of Psychology

Faculty and Staff Listing

Marjorie Hanft, MA

Ms. Marjorie Hanft joined the psychology department in 1988, having completed a two year term as a counselor in EIU’s counseling center, which at the time was a faculty position.  Prior to her employment at EIU, she had higher education teaching experience in English Composition and Literature and additional counseling experience in substance disorder treatment.  During her 27 years in the psychology department, Ms. Hanft taught a wide range of courses including theories of psychotherapy, models of group therapy, abnormal psychology, crisis intervention, and a seminar exploring portrayals of psychopathology in film and memoir.  Beginning in the 1990’s and ending with her retirement, Ms. Hanft also coordinated the psychology department’s undergraduate internship program.
A recipient of Psi Chi’s Outstanding Faculty award on more than one occasion, Ms. Hanft is proud of the many students she supervised--as interns and in independent research--who have gone on to pursue graduate degrees and careers in various applied fields in psychology as well as in a wide range of related fields such as social work, the law, public health, occupational therapy, physical therapy, gerontology, and speech language pathology.
Ms. Hanft earned her bachelor’s degree from Beloit College and graduate degrees from Brown University and the University of Oklahoma.  Her plans in retirement include continuing to advocate for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families, volunteering for community organizations and agencies, reading, writing, and translating poetry and fiction, and living a more sustainable life on local land in central Illinois.
