Message from the Chair

Prospective Students:

I'm so happy that you are considering Political Science at Eastern Illinois University—whether you are a high school student making your college decision, a community college student preparing to transfer to a 4-year institution, a currently enrolled 4-year college/university student contemplating transferring to EIU, or an already enrolled Eastern student thinking about us for your major or minor.

Why Study Political Science at EIU?

  • Small classes encourage discussion and critical thinking
  • Personalized mentoring and advising from faculty--we are here on campus, ready to work with you to achieve your goals
  • All majors develop practical professional skills and networks through internships, government simulations, study abroad, or undergraduate research.
  • All students develop professional career and research skills in their capstone class
  • Flexible study plans allow students to pursue double majors and minors
  • Qualified majors can earn a BA and MA in 5 years through our Accelerated Graduate Program or participate in a joint BA/JD program with Northern Illinois University.

What Can I Do With a Political Science Degree?

You will develop critical knowledge and understanding of politics, governments, and public policies. You will gain essential research, writing, communication, and professional skills, preparing you for careers in government and the public sector, legal fields, nonprofits, higher education, and the corporate world. You will be prepared as a responsible citizen in a diverse world! About 50% of our students go on to earn their law degree or Master's degree. Our students are prepared for careers in fast-growing fields, including government agency analysis, nonprofit organization management, and urban and regional planning. Our three major options allow you to fine-tune your study plan to meet your goals.

  • The Political Science major is ideal for students with broad interests in American politics, international relations, comparative politics, political theory, and law. Students are prepared for a wide-range of government and corporate careers, including law school and graduate school.
  • The Civic and Nonprofit Leadership option emphasizes US public administration, public policy, and nonprofits. Students gain valuable technical skills, such as public budgeting and Geographic Information Systems, and are well-prepared for public sector, nonprofit, and urban planning careers.
  • The International Studies option emphasizes international relations and comparative politics, including interdisciplinary courses and World Languages. This option provides a well-rounded degree to prepare students for careers in global politics, diplomacy, development, and advocacy.
