Welcome!
We're glad you're considering becoming a music major at EIU. We have a thriving department with outstanding faculty, facilities, and most importantly, students! EIU music graduates are leaders in the fields of music education and performance, and many graduates have gone on to become successful music teachers, ensemble directors, university educators, and professional performers.
All music majors take weekly hour-long lessons on their primary instrument or voice. Our applied music faculty are highly-skilled professional musicians and educators, and each an expert on his or her instrument. All students participate in ensembles every semester, and many students play in more than one. Students frequently collaborate with one another in and out of the classroom, developing a spirit of cooperation and a shared love of music.
Degree Programs
The Eastern Illinois University Department of Music offers a variety of undergraduate majors and two minors to help students reach their musical and professional goals. All undergraduate programs share a common set of core courses which include applied study on your primary instrument or voice, ensembles, music theory, music history, and piano. From here each program branches out to provide specialization in your area of interest.
