Large corporations regularly give workshops to their employees on "cultural
diversity." Restaurants in rural Illinois celebrate "Cinco de mayo." Some Americans still
find it easy to believe that we live in a "post-racial" society. While United States social
norms prevent people from spouting openly racist views, many Americans remain in
denial about their own places of privilege and fail to recognize the hidden ways that
racial and cultural identities create hierarchies that give some people easier access to
our society's resources than others. This course attempts to coax people away from a
“food and festival” approach and towards a more nuanced understanding of cultural
identity. We will examine basic tenets of critical race theory and critical multiculturalism,
then explore how these are manifested in literary selections and in our own community
and lives. Completion of 75 semester hours required. Open to all majors except World Language
majors.
Are you looking for a great senior seminar on world film? You will watch films (full
features and clips) from Germany, Italy, South Africa, Japan, India, China, and more (all
subtitled in English). Learn to study film as a unique art form that strongly reflects the
culture of its origin. Compare the influence of foreign film on Hollywood and Hollywood’s
influence on foreign film. Discuss some of the most influential and provocative films of
foreign cinema. Completion of 75 semester hours required. Open to all majors except
World Language majors.
